Art: Meat Tray Boats Ask local grocery store for unused, clean meat trays. Make great boats. Plus collect milk caps and toss them onto floating meat trays with letters/numbers/colors on them. Letters--write upper case on trays; lowercase on caps. They try to make matches. (Younger ones just throw blank caps and try to say the letter it lands on.) Numbers-Match quantity w/numeral or add up points. (meat trays have 1 or 2 on them) Colors--match color of milk cap with color of tray (laminated construction paper circle tapes to it I am a Fish Materials: blue construction paper, photo of child's face, glue, sand, brushes, tape, crayons/felt pens. Directions: Prepare bottom of sea by brushing glue onto blue paper. Sprinkle sand on paper and wait till glue dries. Pour off excess sand. In one of spaces, blue your child's photo. Tissue Paper Fish Gather a package of paper plates, tissue paper, scissors and glue. Pre-mark one paper plate for each child with a pie-shaped wedge (for the tail). Instruct each child to cut along the lines to remove the wedge. Next, staple the pointed side of teh wedge to the opposite end of the plate to form the tail. Give each child several pieces of colored tissue paper and have him tear them into pieces about 1"X1". Have each decorate the fish by gluing the pieces on. You could also use colored cellophane paper. This fish looks like the Rainbow Fish Paper Plate Jellyfish Gather a package of paper plates, glue, streamers and scissors. Cut each plate in half. Give each child 1/2 of the plate. Cut a long strip of crepe paper and mark into sixteen 6" sections. Instruct the kids to cut the crepe paper on the marks and then glue these pieces onto the bottom edge to look like tentacles. Use crayons to make a face on the plate. Flying Fish Socks Get a large box. Paint the box blue to represent the ocean. Ask parents to send in any unmatched socks they do not want. Have the children use permanent markers to decorate the socks to resemble fish. Once the fish have been decorated, fill the socks partially with handfuls of dried beans, then secure the ends with rubber bands. Let the children take turns tossing the flying fish into the box. Dramatic Play: Make into a beach scene. Put out beach towels, sunglasses, straw hats, empty suntan bottles, boat, fishing poles, construction paper fish, picnic basket filled with play food. A Day at the Lake Materials: sack lunch, long stick, string, magnet, small metal objects–bottle caps, keys, blanket. Spread small metal objects around you. Relax as you fish with your child and eat lunch together. Games: Shape Fishing Cut sponges into different shapes. Tape a shape sponge to the front of a bucket.
