Art: Desk Organizer Cut paper towel tubes into various lengths. Paint each tube a different color. Glue the tubes (grouped in a bunch - 4-5) to a piece of painted corrugated cardboard. Use to hold pencils, rulers, paint brushes, or scissors. Mom's Tablecloth Make a fun and easy tablecloth without sewing. Purchase a piece of artists' canvas large enough for your table then stencil a desired pattern onto the fabric. You can also make a table runner, place mats and napkins in the same way. Inexpensive way to make a beautiful change to the dining room. Have a Tea Party Invite your mothers to come to your class for a tea party. Turn the classroom into a restaurant atmosphere by putting white table clothes and flowers on the table. On the day of the party have your children dress up in fancy clothes (big hats, suit coats, whatever you have). On the day of the tea party the mothers sit with their child and enjoy tea, cookies, and sandwiches. Twist the ends together under the button to make a stem. Cut out several petals from poster board and glue them together. When the petals are dry, glue them to the back of the button. Hang your pictures on a hanger with yarn or string to make a mobile. Print the last name on a piece of paper and fasten it to the hanger. Heart of Beans You will need 3-4 cans of shiny clear gloss spray plus the following. Each child will need: 1c. beans or peas (a mixed variety looks nice), 6 oz. white glue, Mixing bowl, spoon, wax paper with heart drawn in the center w/ sharpie, 12" ribbon Directions: Mix the beans with glue and shape into a heart on the wax paper. Shiny Picture Use clear plastic plates (any size, but I think mine were 9" plates). Have the children draw/color a picture of them doing something with their mom and then Mod Podge it on the bottom of the plate several times. As you look at the plate, the picture will be showing. Make a Card Create a one of a kind card for Mom using any of the following materials or suggestions: Use Glitter, Crayons, Pens Colored Pencils, Markers, and/or Paint Lace String, Yarn, Ribbon, Twine Use Paper Doilies Tissue Paper, Torn Paper, Heart Shaped Paper Decorate with Stickers, Sand, Old Puzzle Pieces, Buttons, Colored Glue, Colored Tape, Chalk, Wet Chalk, Wrapping Paper, Stamps, Aluminum Foil, Heart Shaped Confetti, Glue on Candy Confections, Heart Shaped Sponge Painting, Pasta or rice colored with red food coloring Cut the Edges with scrap booking scissors Have pre-written poems for the children to glue on their Card, let the children choose the poem they like the best. Make the card out of the paper doily, heart shaped. Let the children write a poem for the inside. Let the children write a special message, or have the child tell you what to write. Use bleeding tissue paper on white paper. Have the children place small pieces of tissue paper on the paper. Have them add water with a paint brush. Allow to dry, and peel off the paper. Mother's Day Card Materials: Construction paper, various colors, Glue stick, Photos, Scissors, Tape, Green chenille stems, one for each flower, Patterned paper (optional) Directions: Cut photos into circles to be used as the center of the flower. Cut simple flower shapes out of construction paper. Glue photo circle to the center of the flower. This step is optional: Glue construction paper flower to a piece of patterned paper. Cut around the flower giving your construction paper about a half inch border of patterned paper. Tape chenille stem to the back of your flower, be sure tape is secure by pressing onto tape with your fingernail. Trim ends of chenille to the length you desire, depending on what you are using as a vase. If making a hand held bouquet, don’t trim the chenille; simply tie a ribbon bow around them all. Tips: Instead of patterned paper, have children color white paper with various colored markers or crayons and use that as your border. If you find it easier, instead of cutting around the border, trace it lightly first with a pencil, then cut. Even the littlest of children can make this craft, simply help them by cutting out photos and flower ahead of time and have them help with the gluing and taping. Flowers Obtain small clay pots. Have the children decorate them with non toxic paint. When dry add dirt and flowers. The Ultimate Paperweight Supply each child with some modeling clay. Let them shape it however they wish. Let them add marbles, buttons, glitter, sand, pebbles, and string, whatever you can think of. After it dries - it’s a paperweight. Family Portraits Ask parents to bring in pictures of their families, or take pictures of the families at the center. You can place these on the walls at the children's eye level by covering them with contact paper. The children will really enjoy seeing their picture and pictures of others on the walls.
