| Include the following collections of objects and materials for children to create, discover, and use for imaginary play. Store collections in boxes or baskets to be accessible at any time (indoors or outdoors) for children to enhance their dramatic play. K KITCHEN (UPDATED 2007) Plastic toy dishes and food (search for multicultural items), tea set, cook books, play dough, cookie cutters, rolling pins, oven mitts, place mats, empty food boxes and containers (egg cartons, margarine containers, empty cereal boxes), small pots, pans, and metal baking containers, old measuring cups, old aprons, pot holders, plastic cups, plates, and bowls, egg beaters, old handheld mixer or kettle (with cord cut off), old recipe books, old washclothes and sponges for cleaning up, utensils such as whisks, large wooden spoons, and spatulas, old small dishsoap container (cleaned out) with top hot glued on, telephone, an ironing board & plastic iron, a broom & dustpan, dolls for feeding Beyond the Box: A Kitchen centre can be put together from simple furniture created out of cardboard boxes, like refrigerators and stoves, or can be purchased as plastic, ready-made equipment readily available at most toy and department stores. A sturdy set of child-size table and chairs is a must. |
