Butterfly Baggies
Materials:sandwich size zip close baggies, tissue paper in a variety of colors,
6" long pipe cleaner
Directions:Cut the tissue paper into 1/2" squares. Fill the zip close baggie with tissue squares (the more, the filler the wings). Zip the baggie closed, pressing out some of the air. Gather baggie in the middle with the zip close at the top. Twist the pipe cleaner in the middle of the gather to form a butterfly with antennae. Curl the ends of the pipe cleaner of the antennas.

Waxed Paper Butterflies
Shave old crayons and place between a sheet of waxed paper on
newspaper. Cover with another piece of waxed paper. Press iron for a few seconds, cut into butterfly shape and hang in front of window.

BUTTERFLY PRINTS
Have the children remove their shoes and socks. Allow one child at a time to dip a foot into paint (Any color) and step down into the middle of a large piece of paper. Have the child step into a tub of water to rinse his foot. Then have the child paint their hand by brush ,using maybe one color for two fingers, one color for the palm etc. just to receive colorful wings. Have the child make a set of handprints on each side of the footprint. Have the child then wash and dry hands. When the paint is dry cut around the prints by an inch or two in the outline of a butterfly. For finishing touches add wiggly eyes and pipe cleaners for antennae.

Spring Butterflies
Supplies: Food Coloring Coffee Filters Eye Dropper or Straws Wooden Clothes Pin Pipe Cleaner Color small bowls of water with food coloring
Directions: Using an eye dropper or a straw, scatter drops of colored water onto round coffee filters and watch the colors bleed and blend. While the filters dry draw eyes and body details on wooden clothes pins. Gather each coffee filter up in the center and clip with the clothespin. Make antenna for each butterfly by inserting a pipe cleaner into the end of the clothespin and twisting it secure. Bend the ends of the pipe cleaner to make it look realistic. You can use tissue paper instead of coffee filters for a multi-layered effect.

Egg Carton Caterpillars
materials: one egg carton for every 2 children, paints, large paintbrushes, pipe cleaners, glue, cotton balls, dry powdered paint, words to finger play
Procedure:
1. Remove the lid from an egg carton and cut the bottom portion in half lengthwise to make two caterpillars.
2. Let the children paint their caterpillars in any colors they choose.
3. use the pipe cleaners as antennae (feelers). Glue these into place.
4. Help the children dip cotton balls in dry powdered paint and glue them onto the humps to make the caterpillar fuzzy.

Egg Carton Butterflies
Take egg cartons and cut them apart so that there are three bump sections. Cut a slit in each side of the middle section. On the front section draw a face; add a pipe cleaner for antennae. Cut heart shapes for wings. Let the children decorate the wings as they wish. Stick the point of the hearts into the slits to attach the wings. Add a string through the carton above the wings and hang.

Life Cycle Wheel
Divide a large paper plate into 4 sections. In one section make  a butterfly out of a square of tissue paper (twisted in the middle), in the next section  cut out a leaf shape from some green contruction paper and glue a white navy bean on it (Egg). For the next section, create caterpillars out of small pom poms. For the chrysalis, use a bunch of small twigs twith  a pasta shell underneath. The plate is a good organizational tool because it shows  that  the cycle that continues to go around and around.

Butterfly Art
Demonstrate to your students how to draw a background scene along with a flower garden.  You can also use Ellison die-cuts for the flowers if you choose.  To make the butterflies for the garden, have your students draw a 1 to 2 inch black line for a the body.  Then have them glue on two mini pretzels for the wings (the pretzels will be facing the opposite way) and use their black crayon to draw two antennae.  You’ll probably want to demonstrate this before beginning with your students.  Allow them to add a couple of butterflies to their garden, and then enjoy some of the pretzels for their effort!

Coffee Filter Butterflies
Gather the dried coffee filter in the center using an accordian style gathering method.  Twist the filter together with a black pipecleaner.  Spread the coffee filter out to form the wings.  Use the left over pipecleaner to form a body for the butterfly and his antennae.  Curl the ends of the antennae slightly outwards.  You can add a magnet to these and send them home to grace the parents’ refrigerators.

Creepy Crawly Caterpillar

A creepy crawly caterpillar that I see(shade eyes)
Makes a chrysalis in the big oak tree. (make body into a ball)
He stays there, and I know why (slowly stand up)
Because soon he will be a butterfly (flap arms)

No Sew Costume
Take a 24X36 in piece of orange construction paper (for each child) and fold it in half
and trace a wing.  Cut this out and sponge paint with black and white (we use large marshmallows for painting, they work great and are disposable!) on one side, let dry and flip. The wings are attached to the back of a dooddad we make by stapling black strips of construction paper (2 x9) to two 9 x 12 pieces of construction paper to make a
thing that fits over their heads.  It looks like the straps to bib overalls. The wings get stapled in the back . Then make a black headband with two antennas. Roll the antennaes on a crayon to make them curly.

Ode to the Caterpillar
Fuzzy wuzzy, creepy crawly
Caterpillar funny,
You will be a butterfly
When the days are sunny.
Winging, flinging, dancing, springing
Butterfly so yellow,
You were once a caterpillar,
Wiggly, wiggly fellow
Little fuzzy caterpillar In your warm cocoon
The cold winter's over and you'll be hatching soon.
Then you'll spread your wings
On a warm summer's day
And wave us all good bye
As you fly, fly away.

I am just an egg-no bigger than a dot
If you look very carefully
You'll find my special spot
underneath a leaf
My mother put me down
to guard me from my enemies
So I cannot be found

Butterfly, Butterfly, brighten summer days
The beauty of the butterfly started this way

Fuzzy, wuzzy, creepy, crawly

Music

The Caterpillar
(Sung to the Adams family)
My tummy is fat (snap snap)
I like it like that (snap snap)
I wiggle around
I jiggle around
My tummy is fat (snap snap)
I'm a stri-ped caterpillar
I'm such a chubby feller
I love to eat and eat,
those leaves are such a treat
Back to refrain

The Fuzzy Caterpillar
(tune: eensy weensy spider)
The fuzzy caterpillar crawled up upon a leaf
Spun a cocoon and then fell fast asleep
While she was sleeping she dreamed that she could fly
And when she woke up, she was a butterfly!
(we made up hand actions to this)

Butterfly Life Cycle

(Tune: Up on the Housetop)
First comes a butterfly and lays an egg
Out comes a caterpillar with many legs
Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin
A little chrysalis to sleep in!
Oh, oh, oh..wait and see!
Oh, oh, oh...wait and see!
Out of the chrysalis, my oh my!
Out pops a pretty butterfly!

The Life of a Butterfly
(sung to skip to my lou)

I'm a tiny egg under a leaf (sing tree times)
thats the first part of my metamorphosis

I'm a hungry caterpillar eating up leaves(3x)
That's the second part of my metapmorphosis

I make a chrysalis and take a nap inside (3x)
that's the third part of my metamorphosis

I wake up and emerge as a butterfly (3x)
That's the fourth part of my metamorphosis!

Caterpillar Song
(Yankee Doodle Dandy tune)
I started as a tiny egg
Upon a leaf of green (picture is torn construction paper for tree,
a leaf
and a tiny egg all from construction paper)
And now I stay upon the leaf (picture is again with caterpillar on
leaf)
So I will not be seen
Soon I'll build a chrysalis (brown construction tree trunk with
limb and then brown oval for chrysalis)
Upon a limb up high
I'll stay a while and then come out
And be a butterfly

(Sung to the tune of "Up on the Housetop")
First comes the butterfly and lays its eggs.
Out comes the caterpillar with its many legs.
Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin,
A little chrysalis to sleep in!
Oh oh oh, look and see,
Oh oh oh, look and see.
Out of the chrysalis, my oh my
Out comes a pretty butterfly!

Have you Tried?. . .

graph the butterflies you see

Make a GIANT caterpillar!  Use colored lunch bags.  Decorate with  stickers.  Stuff them and then staple the bags all together.

Take on pipe cleaner , 1 white pony bead to represent the egg, 1 red bead to represent the head of the caterpillar, 3 green to represent the caterpillar's body, a glitter bead to represent the chrysalis, and 1 butterfly bead at the end. After the children are done with the bracelet we ask them individually to tell us about their life cycle bracelet. The
kids love their bracelets and are so proud of them.

just planted some parsley plants in my yard and I thought I would share with the group.  I discovered a few summers ago that a certain black fuzzy caterpillar loves parsley.  I took several (my plant was covered!)to school in August/Sept. and fed them parsley from the grocery store.  They grew very fast into bright green with black stripes caterpillars.  It did not take them long to make their chrysalises.  My students left them alone all winter long and in May they emerged as black swallowtail butterflies which are big and beautiful!! Usually one of the children will just happen to look up and
see them.  It is very exciting and FREE!!
